
The Tiruchirappalli unit of Bharat
Heavy Electricals Ltd is planning to
set up a greenfield pipe manufacturing
facility to enhance its capacity, a
top company official said. In addition, the
company is also setting up a plant at
Thirumayam in Pudukottai district of
Tamil Nadu to manufacture pipes.
BHEL Trichy intends to invest Rs 690
crore on capacity expansion and establishing
the Thirumayam plant, A.V. Krishnan,
BHEL-Trichy Executive Director, told
newspersons recently.
The company plans to augment its boiler
capacity. At present, BHEL Trichy has a
capacity to produce boilers for 10,000 mw
which will be increased to 15,000 mw in
two years.
"Chinese companies no longer pose any
threat to BHEL as many power companies
have come back to BHEL for placing their
orders," Krishnan said. He mentioned
power generation companies like Jaypee
Group, Jindal India Thermal Ltd, Pipavav
Energy, India Bulls Group, Jhabua Power,
Adhunik Power and Abhijit Infrastructure.
Commenting on supercritical boilers
manufactured at BHEL Trichy, Krishnan
said that the company had a technology
transfer tie-up with Alstom, the global
leader in power generation. BHEL has
signed a 15-year technology sourcing
agreement with Alstom under which it
would pay Alstom royalty for supercritical
boilers made with technology provided to
BHEL till 2020.
Trichy has become the largest unit of the
parent corporation having contributed 30
per cent of turnover and 40 per cent of
profit last year. More significantly, the unit
crossed the turnover mark two years
ahead of the vision 2012 target of Rs
10,000 crore, Krishnan said, adding BHEL
Trichy currently had an export order book
of Rs 180 crore.
