Emco Ltd, a four-decade old
company focused mainly
in the power T&D segment
and the third largest
manufacturer of transformers in
India, has developed some innovative
products and technologies,
a few of which were showcased
at Elecrama-2010 held in
Mumbai from January 20 to 24.
Some of these were:
Online Transformer Monitoring
System: The reliability of
power system operation can be
enhanced by using automatic
monitoring device for power and
distribution transformers. Emco
has developed an online transformer
monitoring systems
(OTMS) that acquires and monitors
data directly from the sensors
mounted on the transformer.
It is an intelligent, costeffective,
and compact transformer
condition monitoring
system designed to provide
comprehensive diagnostics and
real-time performance data of
transformers in the field to guide
the power system operator in
decision making.
SMART Transformer: A Smart
Grid is complete only with a
'SMART Transformer'. SMART
Transformer is an intelligent,
cost-effective, and compact
transformer monitoring and
energy management system,
designed to provide comprehensive
diagnostics and real-time
performance information to utilities
and large power consumers
to ensure availability of transformer
in service without interruption
of power. The system
comprises transformer, controlling
box, current transformers,
contactors, relays etc.
Eco-friendly Transformer Oil:
Emco, in association with
ERDA, has indigenously developed
natural vegetable dielectric
fluid for transformer application
using a non-edible rapeseed,
which is produced in
abundance in India.
Generally the transformer fluids
are petroleum-based fluids
which are non-biodegradable,
non-renewable and non-environmental
friendly, scarce and
expensive. Spillage of petroleum-
based transformer fluids not
only pollutes the environment
but also causes great economic
losses. Petroleum resources are
fast depleting due its everincreasing
demand and use.
Substitution of the mineral
based dielectric oil with a new
environmentally friendly dielectric
fluid is therefore the need of
the hour. An ideal dielectric liquid
is supposed to have very
good electrical, physical and
chemical properties with stable
ageing characteristics, besides
compatibility with the construction
materials used in the electrical
equipment.
Automatic Power Factor Correction
System: Emco has developed
an automatic power factor
correction system (APFC) that
automatically corrects the power
factor close to unity, thereby
helping improvement in power
system efficiency and reduced
cost of power to the utilities and
the bulk power consumers.
A relatively poor power factor is
typically generated predominantly
by inductive loads such as an
induction motor, a power transformer,
ballast etc., which are
installed in large number in industrial
and commercial facilities.The
APFC regulates the power factor
by insertion and removal of
capacitors in the load circuit.
Emcosine Active Harmonic
Filter: A state-of-the-art active
harmonic filter developed by
Emco corrects anomalies and
delivers clean sine wave power
output. It has benefits like suppression
of harmonic currents,
power factor correction, energy
saving, enhanced equipment life,
improved power quality etc.
