National Institute of Ocean Technology,
an autonomous body of the Ministry of
Earth Sciences, is setting up desalination
plants at nine locations in the Lakshadweep
Islands on PPP basis. The desalination
technology has been indigenously
designed, developed and demonstrated
for conversion of seawater into potable
water based on low temperature thermal
desalination system.
The first plant was commissioned in
Kavaratti, Lakshadweep, in May 2005. Currently,
the work of setting up three LTTD desalination
plants, one each at Agatti, Minicoy and
Andrott, is in progress and is expected to be
completed by May 2011.
The other sites identified in the five
islands are Chetlat, Kadmat, Kiltan,
Kalpeni and Amini, to be commissioned by
March 2012.
Upcoming Projects Lakshadweep
Each of the plants will have a production
capacity of 1 lakh lpd of freshwater.
Funds to the tune of Rs.26.60 crore have been
allocated for the plants at Agatti, Minicoy and
Andrott, whereas an allocation of Rs.32.68
crore has been made for the plants at Chetlat,
Kadmat, Kiltan, Kalpeni and Amini.
