Power Finance Corporation Ltd has extended the last date of
submission of RfQ for the 4,000-mw UMPP at Surguja in
Chhattisgarh to November 8, as the coal mines allotted for the
project fall under the no-go area and await environment clearance.
The project is already facing a delay of six months.
The Ministry of Environment and Forests has rejected approval
for mining in Puta and Parogla blocks allocated to
the Surguja UMPP as they are located in forest
land. The two blocks with estimated reserves of 692 million
tonnes are in the Hasdoe-Arand coalfield. The issue is being
discussed by the ministries of power and coal but no decision
has been taken so far.
PFC is the nodal agency for bidding for ultra mega power projects.
According to reports, NTPC Ltd, Tata Power Ltd, Reliance
Industries Ltd, L&T Ltd, Jindal Power Ltd, Essar Power Ltd and
Sterlite Ltd have shown interest in the project. Sarguja UMPP is
the fifth such project with four ultra mega power projects
already awarded.
