Urmila Project Services, a division
of Ardeshir B. Cursetjee
& Sons Ltd (200-year old
ABC Dubash Group), again set a
new record at Mumbai Port on
August 19, 2010, by handling
super ODC consignments of
lengths up to 49 metres and
height 5.9 metres for Mangalore
Refinery-the first coastal shipment
of super ODC cargo of such
size handled from Mumbai Port
for the refinery project.
The contract for multimodal
transportation of four super ODC's
of stripper, absorber and debutanizer
equipment was awarded
to Urmila Projects by Phils Engineering
Ltd. These super ODC
consignments were fabricated at
their factory at Pagdha. Amongst
them, the heaviest consignment
was around 300 mt with a maximum
length of 49 metres and
maximum height of 5.90 metres.
After fabrication, transportation
of these consignments to Mangalore
Refinery and selection of proper
logistics operator was a big challenge
for the Phils engineering
team. This difficult job was entrusted
to Urmila Project Services, a
premier heavy lift transport and
project services company in India.
Due to their excessive length,
the transport needed thorough
and comprehensive planning and
mobilisation of proper equipment
along with high level expertise in
handling such consignments.
After undertaking an exhaustive
feasibility study, considering the
dimensions and weights as well as
safety of the consignments
besides avoiding a few long span
bridges in Mumbai, Urmila opted
to transport them by road-cumbarge-
cum-road, moved packages
by road and barge to Mumbai
Port, and used floating crane at
the port for discharge of one heavy
lift from barge to shore.
The company has in-house
expertise, owns a large hydraulic
trailer fleet of 120 axles which is
being supplemented very shortly,
dedicated heavy lift barges and
tugs, and mobilised total 58 Goldhofer
hydraulic axles, five prime
movers, and barge and tug each
for this project.
