Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is being restructured so as to be eligible for Central aid for power projects, Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami said. The Centre had stated that it would not provide any financial assistance if TNEB was not restructured in line with the provisions of the Electricity Act 2003. The state government has approved the reorganisation of TNEB by setting up a holding company, TNEB Ltd, and two subsidiaries, Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation. Veeraswami asserted that the restructuring was not a means to selling the subsidiaries to private parties.
By 2013-14, TNEB is hopeful of enhancing its power capacity by over 7,000 mw. Among the power projects, the electricity board will add 1,893 mw to its generation capacity apart from 4,100 mw through joint ventures with Ney-veli Lignite Corporation, NTPC Ltd and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. Land acquisition for the 4,000-mw UMPP at Cheyyur will be over in three months.
