The Ministry of Shipping
plans to award 25 port projects
valued at Rs 800 crore
under the PPP during the current
fiscal. There are 13 major ports-
Kolkata (with Haldia), Paradip,
Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai,
Tuticorin, Cochin, New Mangalore,
Mormugao, Mumbai,
Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Kandla-
which handle over 500 million
tonnes of cargo annually.
The projects include creation of
a mega container terminal or bulk
transshipment at Chennai Port
and New Mangalore Port; conversion
of a berth for container terminal
at Tuticorin Port; creation of a
container terminal at Jawaharlal
Nehru Port; installation of three
mechanised handling facilities
and development of two eastern
wings or keys at Visakhapatnam
Port; and construction of two riverine
jetties at Kolkata Port.
Besides, the projects also
include the development and
operation of two berths at Indira
Dock as a dry bulk cargo terminal
and the development and
operation of a dry commercial
cargo, both at Mumbai Port. The
government may also award an
international cruise terminal at
Cochin Port.
Of the 25 projects, two projects at
Paradip and Ennore ports have
been awarded to Sterlite-
Leighton and Eredene Capital
consortium, respectively
