Fiscal 2010-11-the fourth
year of the ongoing 11th
Plan-has a target to add
21,444.2 mw of generating
capacity. Achievement of this target,
which is slightly less than
22,302 mw commissioned during
the previous three years, is crucial
as it would largely decide the
accomplishment of the 78,700
mw target set for the current plan.
The capacity augmentation,
which had dropped from 9,263
mw in 2007-08 to 3,254 mw in
2008-09, rebounded with 9,585
mw in the subsequent year.
Overall, the first three years saw
the commissioning of half the
planned capacity for the period.
April and early May 2010 saw
the capacity addition of 250 mw
at Surat Lignite TPP Extension
by Gujarat Industries Power
Company Ltd and a like capacity
at Chhabra TPS (unit 2) by Uttar
Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan
Nigam Ltd.
As in the earlier years and, in
fact, as in the country's overall
power mix, there is overwhelming
emphasis on thermal power
which would contribute 87 per
cent of new capacity planned for
the year. Hydropower would
contribute 7 per cent and nuclear
the balance 6 per cent. The private
sector would account for 31
per cent of the planned capacity
against 44 per cent in 2009-10,
25 per cent in 2008-09, and 8 per
cent in 2007-08.
