Siemens has announced its
plans to invest Rs 500 crore
over the next three years
in setting up wind turbine
manufacturing capacity in
India. This is part of the Rs
1,600-crore investment multidiscipline
plan that Siemens
has in India.
The engineering
conglomerate will
start with a
production capacity
of 200 mw per year
that would be scaled
up to 500 mw.
Siemens is looking
at Tamil Nadu and
Gujarat-both wind
p o w e r - c e n t r i c
states-to put up its
m a n u f a c t u r i n g
plant. A final
decision on the location is
expected later this month.
Siemens has said that it would
hire around 3,000 professionals
for the new venture.
India has over a dozen wind
turbine manufacturers with
Suzlon Energy being the leader
with a market share of 45 per
cent, followed by Enercon with
20 per cent. India's wind power
potential is estimated at over 48
GW while actual installations
stand at only 10.2 GW.
The Centre is promoting wind
energy installations through a
variety of incentives, and wind
energy will form the crux of
renewable capacity addition in
the coming years. During the
11th Plan period, around 15,000
mw of capacity is targeted to
come from renewable and clean
energy sources, out of which
wind alone accounts for 11,500
mw. In the first two years of the
current Plan period, actual
wind power capacity addition
stood at 3,121 mw.
