Chennai Corporation to generate electricity from waste
PM News BureauTuesday, December 27, 2011, 12:01 Hrs  [IST]

The Chennai Corporation is planning to generate electricity from the garbage it collects daily. If the plan becomes successful, it can solve two problems of the city in single stroke. While it will provide much needed electricity for the city, it will also help reduce the garbage in the city. Currently, the city has two dumping yards which collect 3,600 tonnes of garbage daily. The civic body plans to dispose off biodegradable and recyclable waste to industries and burn the remaining waste to generate power. The civic body is planning to float tenders inviting companies with this technology from across the world. However, environmentalists and waste management experts, are skeptical about the proposed project and cite several such plans which failed to take off.
