MUMBAI URBAN TRANSPORT PROJECT-II
The World Bank has
approved a $430 million
loan to Indian Railways
for part funding of the
ongoing Mumbai Urban Transport
Project-II that aims to
improve transport in and around
the metropolis.
MUTP-II comprises various
components including laying
tracks between Chhatrapati
Shivaji Terminal in south Mumbai
and Kurla, an eastern suburb,
besides those between
Thane and Diva on the outskirts,
and Mumbai Central and Borivali,
a western suburb.
The other components include
extension of the Harbour Line
from Andheri to Goregaon in the
western suburbs; alteration of
electrical systems; manufacturing
and procurement of electrical multiple
units; and technical and institutional
strengthening studies.
Another important component
of the project, which is
scheduled to be completed by
2014-15, is resettlement and
rehabilitation of project-affected
households and improvement
of stations and building
infrastructure for regulating
access to them.
Longest rail over-bridge for MumbaiMumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is constructing
the longest single-span rail over-bridge at Milan
subway in northwest Mumbai to solve waterlogging and traffic
congestion during monsoon.
The bridge will be an engineering marvel as it will be the longest single-
span steel girder bridge over railway tracks in the city. The estimated
cost of this project is Rs. 33 crore.
The construction of the ROB on both sides of the railway line
will start in October and completed by March 2011. The entire
800-metre ROB will connect SV Road to Western Express Highway
service road.
