The State Highways Department has commenced the work for construction of a
road overbridge across the Nanjundapuram railway level crossing in
Coimbatore. The project entailing an investment of Rs 12.6 crore is expected
to be completed by August 2011. The ROB would ease congestion in Tiruchi
Road, Town Hall, Ukkadam and Aatuppalam areas. The Department officials said
that the road over bridge would measure 693 m of which the railway portion
right across the railway line would be 38 m.
The entire rail over bridge would be resting on as many as 27 pillars. The
width of the bridge would be 8.5 m and the road surface width available for
vehicles would be 7.5 m. As the road remains closed for facilitating the
work, the authorities are in the last leg of their efforts to create an
alternative route for two-wheelers and light motor vehicles.
In consultation with the railways, the authorities plan to lay a path for
the two-wheelers and light motor vehicles running along the railway track
and pass through a close by railway under pass.
