Global platform for STEEL buildings & structures
A BUSINESS CORRESPONDENT
Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 17:21 Hrs  [IST]

The Metal Buildings & Steel Structures Expo 2012 (MBSS'12) — India's flagship event on steel structures and allied products — is scheduled to be held at Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai, from April 12 to 14, 2012.

MBSS'12 is an international event on modern methods for fast-track construction and will serve as a platform for the makers of world-class steel buildings and structures to showcase their latest products and innovations in the industry. In this context, the event will prove to be an ideal platform for exploring new business opportunities and disseminating knowledge about new technology and services.

The fourth edition of MBSS in 2012 has been planned as part of an effort to integrate steel and allied metals not only in infrastructure and industrial projects but also in high-rise buildings and structures.

The two key focus areas of this event are structural steel and pre-engineered buildings.

The steel structures market in India is in excess of 4.5 million tonnes and is growing at a rapid pace of more than 10 per cent per annum over the past few years. This market has experienced a higher growth compared to both the Indian steel industry as well as Indian construction GDP.

According to MBSS India, overall, the construction sector accounts for majority (greater than 80 per cent) of the steel structures market (in volume terms) in India, which is further classified into the following three segments:

Industry: Accounts for more than 50 per cent of demand, primarily driven by the steel industry.

Infrastructure: With overall focus on development of infrastructure, a high demand for steel structures is seen within this segment. The power sector remains the key demand driver considering the central government's ambitious target of adding around 140,000 MW of additional generation capacity in the just-concluded 11th and 12th Five-Year Plan.

Buildings: Steel structures (especially PEBs) have a strong presence in factory and warehouse buildings segment. Future potential in high-rise buildings could be significant considering the fast pace of construction desired and scarcity of land in large metropolitan areas.

On April 13, a conference on the theme Steel Structures in India: An Opportunity to Evolve will be held at the venue. Speakers will include experts from the global metal buildings and steel structures industry.

With continued focus by the government towards the development of core infrastructure such as power, airports and railways, early indications of revival in the industrial sector and probable shift in preference from concrete towards steel structures in the buildings segment, the structural steel demand in India is likely to be robust over the next few years.

MBSS'12 builds on the success of its earlier editions in Chennai, Pune and New Delhi and is poised to set new standards in terms of footfalls as well as business deals. Mumbai has been chosen as the show destination due to its strategic location and the immense construction activity planned in the region. The growth numbers suggest a huge market opportunity and MBSS'12 hopes to see it materialise.
