Industry eyes telecom sector for solar applications
PM NEWS BEURAU
Tuesday, September 28, 2010, 10:47 Hrs  [IST]

Untitled - 11.jpgThe solar energy sector has identified telecom as one of the major sectors that can use solar technologies efficiently. India currently has around 4.5 lakh telecom towers, most of which are running on diesel-generated power. According to industry stakeholders, solar panels can replace the diesel generators very effectively.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is taking up this proposition seriously and is in talks with the Ministry of Telecom to implement the suggestion. The ministry has also been approached by several telecom operators.

A diesel generator is run for an average time of six hours consuming two litres of petrol every hour. Over a period of time, solar energy can prove to be more economical besides being a clean source of energy.
