The Union government has sanctioned Rs 50 crore for various tourism projects
in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam regions. The India Tourism
Development Corporation Ltd. has prepared a detailed report about the
projects to be implemented to attract tourists.
The projects planned include an Arts & Crafts Village at Murungapakkam
entailing an investment of Rs 5.85 crore, beautification of the riverside &
beach at Chunnambar at a cost of Rs 4.98 crore, development of urban
forestry near the Swadheshi Mill complex at a cost of Rs 3.53 crore,
beautification
& renovation of Botanical Garden for Rs 7.30 crore and development of Bahour
lake at a cost of Rs 5.62 crore.
While in Karaikal region, the government planned to develop the Nallambal
Lake at a cost of Rs 4.98 crore, for the third phase of Mahe beach
beautification project Rs 6 crore would be spent and another Rs 7 crore for
development of Botanical garden at Yanam.
Apart from these projects, the Tourism Department is setting up of the
proposed Archaeological Park at Arikamedu and is to allocate Rs 14 crore to
the Revenue Department for land acquisition.
