The Centre has approved two schemes for the development of sewerage systems in Agra and Meerut in Uttar Pradesh under JNNURM. The projects will be executed by UP Jal Nigam.
The Agra sewerage scheme project will provide sewerage facilities in two important zones, including central and Tajganj, and collect, convey, treat and dispose off the sewerage. The scheme is expected to cover 19 per cent area of the city benefiting about 37 per cent of the populace. The Rs 196-crore project will be financed by the Centre (50 per cent), local body (30 per cent) and state government (20 per cent).
The first sewerage project under JNNURM in Meerut will entail laying 246 km of sewer lines, six pumping stations and a 72-million lpd sewage treatment plant. This project is estimated to cost Rs 186 crore.
Both the projects are scheduled for completion within two years from the date of award of contracts.
