Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (Naina), the upcoming smart city on 562 hectares of land around the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), will have about 30 zones, each dedicated to a particular economic activity. Each zone will be planned on the basis of resources available in its particular area. Naina will have zones dedicated to industry, tourism, the medical sector, education, Information Technology (IT), service sector etc.

The state government appointed think tank Mumbai Transformation Support Unit (MTSU) has been given the responsibility to prepare the zonal plan. MTSU is going to appoint a consultant to prepare the report on economic planning in the Naina zone.

The report is expected to be delivered in six months’ time. These 30 zones will be developed as smart towns. Of these 30, 12 are expected to be developed in the next fifteen years. There will be metro connectivity in the Naina, in addition to major highways, including the Virar- Alibaug Multimodal Corridor. Interestingly, these areas will have provision for affordable housing, to make the Naina city attractive for people, and economically viable.
