India’s Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal recently announced that five lakh LED lights would be installed in Delhi at an approximate cost of Rs. 500 crore.

Goyal said that the government was implementing various projects to strengthen the power system in Delhi. After these schemes were implemented, the residents of Delhi would no longer have to depend on diesel generators and invertors for power supply. The schemes, which include LED lighting, would also help Delhi reduce its overall power consumption. He added that in coming times consumers would be able to select their power service provider as per their suitability.

He was speaking on the occasion of the foundation stone ceremony for two power substations and dedication of one substation in Delhi. The 400kV substation of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd at Rajghat and 220kV substation at Preet Vihar and another substation at Harsh Vihar substation of Delhi Transco Ltd are expected to significantly improve the power scenario in Delhi. These substations will be built with state-of the-art technology and especially cater to power demand in Central, East and North Delhi.

In view of the importance of reliable power supply for Delhi, the national capital region, the Ministry of Power is in the process of improving the transmission and distribution of electricity through a strong interstate transmission system along with 400/220kV grid substations. Four 400/220kV substations along with associated 400kV transmission network are being implemented within the periphery of Delhi to import power from various sources outside the state. These ISTS (interstate transmission system) 400/220kV substations are planned to be established at Rajghat, Tughlakabad, Karampura and Papankalan by PGCIL. The projects are scheduled to be commissioned by 2016-17.

Apart from PGCIL’s projects in the capital region, Delhi Transco Ltd plans to develop an intrastate network so as to absorb power in a reliable manner. The intrastate system will include 220/33 kV GIS substations at Preet Vihar, Papankalan III, Rajghat, Tughlakabad and Karampura besides reconductoring of existing lines and establishing new ones.
