The 28-MW Nyabarongo HEP is located in Rwanda in central Africa.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd has achieved a landmark in the Africa region by constructing and successfully commissioning a hydropower project in Rwanda, on turnkey basis, a company release said.

The order for setting up the 28-MW (2×14) Nyabarongo HEP was the first order received by BHEL from the central African country. Prior to this, the company had established its presence in a number of African nations like Sudan, Libya, Ethiopia, Egypt, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda and Nigeria.

Both the generating units of the Rwanda power project were synchronised with the grid and with the commissioning of this project; the installed generating capacity of Rwanda has gone up by 24 per cent from 119 MW to 147 MW.

Nyabarongo HEP is owned by the Government of Rwanda and has been financed under the Government of India’s Line of Credit.

In India, BHEL commissioned the sixth unit of the 6×68.67 MW hydro generating unit at Rampur hydropower project in Himachal Pradesh. With this, BHEL has commissioned the 412-MW hydropower plant of the state-owned SJVN Ltd.

The Rampur HEP powerhouse is located on Satluj river, a major tributary of the Indus Basin in Himachal Pradesh, 120 km from Shimla. The project is designed to utilise the water that comes out after generation from Nathpa Jhakri Power Plant and is diverted from Jhakri tailrace pond to the intake of Rampur HEP through a tunnel. The power stations at Jhakri and Rampur are designed to be operated in tandem. The project does not require construction of a dam, reservoir capacity or additional land inundation.

The greenfield project will be capable of generating approximately 1,770 GWh in a 90 per cent hydrological dependable year when all the units are operating.

Meanwhile, BHEL announced the successful commissioning of India’s first indigenously developed and manufactured Phase Shifting Transformer (PST) at Kothagudem TPS, Stage-VI, in Telangana. The order was placed on BHEL by Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Ltd (erstwhile APGenco). The 400kV/220kV, 315 MVA rating PST will be utilised to control and improve the power flow between 400kV & 220kV network in either direction by providing phase shift as per the system requirement.
