City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO), a government of Maharashtra undertaking, has invited Request for Qualification from eligible players for development of airport at Navi Mumbai, more than 16 years after Ministry of Civil Aviation and Government of India constituted a committee to examine the various sites for a second airport in Mumbai in 1997. GVK group which is operating the existing airport in Mumbai has the first right of refusal for developing the second airport as it would come up within 150 km of existing airport.

CIDCO forecasts that air traffic in Mumbai region will grow from present level of 30 million passengers per annum (MPPA) to 100 MPPA by 2030-31. Existing Mumbai airport can handle only up to 40 MPPA and hence the need for second airport.

Reputed international consultant, LBG has prepared the Master Plan for the proposed airport project. The airport will accommodate two parallel runways for simultaneous and independent operations. The project is proposed to be developed over an area of 1160 hectares in four phases. The master plan provides for the development of a full-scale passenger terminal building of 10 MPPA and a low-cost carrier terminal of 2 MPPA in Phase I. The first phase is expected to be complete by 2018.
