Electronic toll collection (ETC) plan of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has hit a hurdle, and will now be reworked upon by roping in other financial institutions.

At present, ICICI and Axis Banks, have tied up with MoRTH to provide ETC chips and refilling the prepaid system. The tags are Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) equipment pasted on the windscreen. Even the newly manufactured vehicles in India have the ETC tags pre-fixed on the top center of the windshields.

Currently, certain toll plazas have a lane reserved for ETC tags. They are at Bandra-Worli Sea Link and at Charoti on Mumbai- Ahmedabad Highway near Mumbai. The same system has also been put up across India. The idea is to reduce the queues at toll plazas wherein a motorist can just drive the vehicle without having to wait to carry out the physical transaction. At least one lane will be reserved for the system.
