Hydropower capacity addition targets set for 13th and 14th Five Year plan appear to be ambitious, if the current pace of execution is any indication. The government has set a target of 18,391 MW for the 13th Plan and 29,032 MW for the 14th Plan. As against this, the capacity addition proposed for the 12th plan is just 8,577 MW.

Of the 48 hydel projects identified for the 13th Plan, 13 projects totaling 4,328 MW are under construction, while Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have been concurred for 32 projects with total installed capacity of 11,743 MW. Further, 3 projects, namely, Lower Subansiri, Koldam and Parbati-III HEP, have slipped from the 12th plan and will now come up in the 13th plan. Of the projects planned for 14th Plan, DPRs for 6 projects are awaiting approval which is likely to be achieved in the next 6 months, while DPRs for 44 projects are under examination.
