Chinki hydro electric project is likely to move into fast lane next year with Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) tentatively fixing November 2015 as the date for inviting Request for Qualifications (RfQs) for EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract. The construction works of the project are slated to begin in February 2016.

Though the Chinki HEP was announced way back in 2008 its execution was delayed due to change in project configuration. Originally it was planned to set up 25 MW HEP at the site and Water & Power Consultancy Services India (WAPCOS) had prepared DPR accordingly. However, later on it was decided to covert the project into a multi purpose project and included an irrigation project to irrigate 73,000 hectares land. The project will now have 15 MW HEP. The multipurpose project, to be located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, is expected to cost approximately Rs. 1,415.35 crore
