India could add only 700 MW power generation capacity in January 2014 as against the targeted 978.67 MW, thereby missing the target by 28.4%. For January, the target for the thermal sector was set at 910 MW while it was 68.67 MW for hydro power sector. However, only 700 MW thermal power project was commissioned in January and in hydro power sector no capacity addition was achieved during the month. During the ten months from April 2013 to January 2014, the capacity addition stood at 9,428 MW as compared to 10,731 MW capacity addition achieved in the corresponding period of 2012-13.

Further, all India plant load factor (PLF) in January 2014 stood at 69.82%, as against 69.05% recorded during the previous month of December. While central sector and state sector utilities performed better in terms of PLF, private sector turned out poor performance.
