Coal Factory_Telangana_ProjectsMonitorCreation of Telangana has its impact not only above the ground in Andhra but beneath it as well! Take the case of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) which is operating 15 opencast and 35 under-ground mines. Of these, 8 under-ground mines require Environmental Clearance (EC) in view of renewal of mining lease.

However, due to the Telangana agitation, SCCL was not able to conduct public hearing which is necessary for obtaining EC for its mines. With the Ministry of Environment & Forests directive to stop mining activities without valid EC, SCCL is left with no option but to approach Ministry of Coal with a request to pursue MoEF to permit operation of its 8 under-ground mines till the company gets EC renewed.

SCCL had produced 531.9 lakh tones of coal for the year 2012-13 against the target of 540 lakh tones. Mining activities of SCCL are presently spread over four districts of Andhra Pradesh Viz. Adilabad, Karimnagar, Khammam and Warangal.
