Tata Power Company Limited which is planning to modernize the unit 6 of its Trombay thermal power station in Maharashtra through change of fuel from LSHS/LSFO to imported coal may have to spend Rs 1,174 crore. The company may have to import 2 MTPA of coal having GCV (Gross Calorific Value) of at least 5000 Kcal/Kg every year for fueling the 500 MW unit. The company will have to install FGD (Flue-gas desulfurization) for the unit.

Further, the company has to tackle the problem of fly ash generated by the thermal power unit. The power unit is expected to generate 216 MT of fly ash and 54 MT of bottom ash per day. On the brighter side, the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) has already given its nod for modernization of the 500 MW unit 6 of Trombay thermal power station, of course, with some stringent conditions attached to it.
