NHPC’s wait for wildlife clearance for its 520 MW Teesta Stage-IV Hydroelectric Power Project in North Sikkim is a long one and this wait is unlikely to end soon. NHPC has so far failed to get the approval from the National Board of Wild Life (NBWL) which is mandatory as the project is located within 10 km from the Khangchendzonga National Park and the Fambonglho Wildlife Sanctuary in Sikkim. While the NBWL had earlier deferred the proposal in March 2013, the issue was again listed for discussion in September 2013 but was not taken up during the meeting. The wildlife clearance has been delayed as the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has failed to reconstitute a new committee till date, after the expiry of the terms of the earlier committee.

The project involves implementation of 4×130 MW Teesta stage IV hydel power project in Sanklang village near Mangan in North Sikkim district of Sikkim. The project is estimated to cost Rs. 3,703 crore.
