World crude steel production reached 1,662 million tonnes during 2014, according World Steel Association (worldsteel) compilation, up by 1.2 per cent over the calendar year, indicating a slowdown from 3.5 per cent during 2013. Earlier, the growth rate in global steel production had dropped to 6.8 per cent in 2011 and 1.6 per cent in 2012; from 16 per cent in 2010 that was largely a bounce back from declines in the earlier two global meltdown-hit years. The Middle East, the smallest region for crude steel production, had the most robust growth. Crude steel production in EU, North America and Asia grew modestly during the year, while in the CIS and South America it decreased.

Annual production was 1,132.3 million tonnes of crude steel in Asia, an increase of 1.4 per cent compared to 2013. China’s crude steel production reached 822.7 million tonnes, an increase of 0.9 per cent in 2013. China’s share of world crude steel production decreased from 49.7 per cent in 2013 to 49.5 per cent. Japan produced 110.7 million tonnes (+0.1 per cent) and South Korea 71.0 million tonnes (+7.5 per cent). The EU recorded an increase of 1.7 per cent to 169.2 million tonnes of crude steel in 2014. In this, Germany produced 42.9 million tonnes (+2.9 per cent), Italy 23.7 million tonnes (-1.4 per cent) and France 16.1 million tonnes (+0.7 per cent). Crude steel production in North America was 121.2 million tonnes (+2 per cent), with USA producing 88.3 million tonnes (+1.7 per cent).

Intra-year, capacity utilization for crude steel production had increased to 78.7 per cent by around June 2014, from 75 per cent in December 2013, but fell to 72.7 per cent by the end of the calendar year 2014.

India Angle
Crude steel production in India increased 2.3 per cent to 83.2 million tonnes in calendar year 2014. The country ranks fourth in crude steel producer, after China (822.7 million tonnes), Japan (110.7 million tonnes) and USA (88.3 million tonnes). However, with per capita consumption of just 57.8 kg in 2013, the country ranks much lower, compared to an average consumption of 515.1 kg in China, 516.4 kg in Japan, 300.2 kg in USA and a world average of 225.2 kg.

Capacity for crude steel production expanded from about 75 million tpa in 2009-10 to about 101.02 million tpa in 2013-14. Production for sale of total finished steel (alloy + non-alloy) stood at 87.67 million tonnes during 2013-14, as against 60.62 million tonnes in 2009-10, an average annual (CAGR) growth of 9 per cent between 2009-10 and 2013-14. The country is the world’s largest producer of direct reduced iron (DRI) or sponge iron.

World Steel Association (worldsteel) represents approximately 170 steel producers (including nine of the world’s 10 largest steel companies), national and regional steel industry associations, and steel research institutes. worldsteel members represent around 85 per cent of world steel production.
