A detailed report of the 'study tour' to Canada, undertaken by ministers, bureaucrats and engineers from Maharashtra in November 2005, to study transportation models for possible implementation in Mumbai and elsewhere in the state, has been submitted to the state government. "We have submitted a detailed perspective to the government," a spokesperson for the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking said.
Minister of State for Urban Development Rajesh Tope said, "The study tour mainly concentrated on improving the viability of monorail, metro rail and bus system in Mumbai."
The cost of constructing and maintaining monorail, which has been proposed in north-west Mumbai, was closely scrutinised. The government is awaiting the World Bank funding for this project, on the lines of the multi-crore MUTP currently under way. "We want to make transportation in Maharashtra among the best in the next two years," Tope said.
