TNEB may take up Cheyyur project
PM News Bureau
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is considering the option of going solo in implementing the proposed 2x800 mw Cheyyur gas-fired power project. As per the original plan the project was to be implemented as a joint venture between NTPC and TNEB, and was to come up in the 11th Plan. However, NTPC has not taken much interest.
Originally there was plan to set up a coal-based plant in Cheyyur. However, the Union ministry of environment & forests turned down permission to set up the project in 1999. Later on it was decided to set up a gas based project, and in 2002 NTPC invited bids for supply of LNG/regassified LNG/natural gas. However, the project could not take off further as negotiations for the supply of gas were not successful.
