Ring road for Coimbatore
PM News Bureau
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi recently laid the
foundation stone of two road projects in Coimbatore district. The project is
estimated to cost Rs 97 crore. Work on the projects is expected to begin soon.
One of the projects is six laning of the 16-km Neelambur-Uppilipalaym stretch on
NH-47. On this stretch, apart from the airport, three engineering colleges, two
medical colleges, four arts colleges (besides a number of schools), industrial
units and textile mills are located. An IT park has also been proposed on the
same stretch.
All two lanes, three lanes and four lanes on the stretch will be replaced by six
lanes (widening it from 11 metres to 23.2 metres), including construction of
four bridges and nine culverts.
The state government has sanctioned Rs 27 crore for NH-47 work.
The second project is a 45-km ring road and widening of existing roads in
Tirupur town. This 99-km project is estimated to cost Rs 70 crore. Besides,
tenders have been floated for a Rs 40 lakh bridge between Santhi theatre and
Tirupur Textiles and is awaiting the approval of the chief engineer of highways.
Also, the long-pending Ondipudur over-bridge work is expected to be completed by
April. Similarly, the Railways will complete the Valankulam over-bridge work by
September 2007.
