Revival of Periyar river basin planned

For a comprehensive and ecologically sustainable revival of
the Periyar river basin, a project costing Rs 20 crore has been proposed. The
draft plan which has been prepared by the working group on environment has been
submitted to the State Planning Board of Kerala. The draft plan has also
proposed the constitution of a river authority. The project would be executed by
local bodies.
Corroding to the draft plan all aspects, including protection of the catchment
area, aforestation programmes, dam safety, water flow control, urban waste
management and sewage treatment, industrial pollution, sand-mining and
bio-diversity would be addressed while implementing the project.
The plan also recommends a comprehensive assessment of the contamination in
Eloor-Edayar industrial belt. The EIA made by the Local Area Environment
Committees would be taken into account while formulating a plan for restoration
of the industrial belt, which has been subjected to hazardous waste
contamination.
