PM News Bureau

For a comprehensive and ecologically sustainable revival of the Periyar river basin, a project costing Rs 20 crore has been proposed. The draft plan which has been prepared by the working group on environment has been submitted to the State Planning Board of Kerala. The draft plan has also proposed the constitution of a river authority. The project would be executed by local bodies.
Corroding to the draft plan all aspects, including protection of the catchment area, aforestation programmes, dam safety, water flow control, urban waste management and sewage treatment, industrial pollution, sand-mining and bio-diversity would be addressed while implementing the project.
The plan also recommends a comprehensive assessment of the contamination in Eloor-Edayar industrial belt. The EIA made by the Local Area Environment Committees would be taken into account while formulating a plan for restoration of the industrial belt, which has been subjected to hazardous waste contamination.
