Madras Cements forays into sugar

A Business Correspondent

Madras Cements Ltd, the flagship company of Ramco Group, plans to foray into sugar by setting up a 10,000-tccpd sugar mill at Vengur in Viluppuram district of Tamil Nadu. The company filed an IEM to this effect in August this year. The diversification will also help the company to meet its future power requirement through the cogeneration plant.
Meanwhile, Madras Cements is expanding its captive power capacity by setting up a new unit of 18 mw at Jayanthipuram in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. The project, on completion, will increase the total captive power capacity to 36 mw. It will be ready by March 2008.
