Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana was launched in Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal on January 30, 2008. Under this nationwide electrification programme, West Bengal has so far provided 32 project proposals covering 18 districts. Of these, 13 projects spanning as many districts were sanctioned during the 10th Plan period (2002-07) with a total investment of Rs 385 crore. As of January 18, 2008, a total of Rs 395 crore was released to West Bengal for RGGVY projects. In the ongoing 11th Plan period, 19 projects including 13 supplementary projects will be taken up for implementation.
Launched in April 2005, RGGVY aims to provide electricity in all villages and habitations in the next four years and envisages access to electricity to all rural households. This programme has now been brought under the ambit of Bharat Nirman.
