GPS pilot project for Bangalore

PM News Bureau

The ministry of shipping, road transport and highways has approved Central assistance of Rs 80 lakh for implementing a pilot project of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, mainly, an online GPS/GPRS based vehicle-tracking system—the first-of-its-kind in the country.
The project, likely to cost Rs 3.31 crore, will involve 500 vehicles in the first stage on pilot basis. BMTC is currently implementing online GPS with GPRS based vehicle tracking systems on build-own-operate and transfer (BOOT) basis.
A GPS system has several benefits, such as, it ensures schedule adherence by the bus crew, facilitates control over deviation, provides traffic loading information, helps in driving pattern analysis, and supports billing process.
