India's longest ropeway over Brahmaputra

The Assam government plans to construct a ropeway across
Brahmaputra river. The 1.8-km long ropeway—the longest in the country—will
connect the capital city, Guwahati, with north Guwahati via Umanand island. This
was revealed by Guwahati Development Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while
inaugurating the Nehru park beautification project.
The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 28.17 crore. The ropeway will
be complete by June 2010. Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority is
implementing the project.
Mantu Bora, assistant executive engineer, GMDA, told Projectswire that Rites Ltd
had prepared the DPR for the project. Samir-Damodar Ropeway Construction Company
Pvt. Ltd of Kolkata will build ropeway. The total capacity of the ropeway will
be 406 passengers per day.
