for several packages have been awarded and work commenced. A few contracts are in
the process of finalisation. In March
2001, a consortium comprising Larsen & Toubro among four other companies has
bagged a Rs.1,650 crore contract for the construction of an underground corridor
between ISBT station to Central Secretariat. The entire project is expected to be
completed by March 2005.

The detailed investigation and final location survey has been taken up by RITES. The project is expected to be completed in seven
years from the zero date.

location survey is in progress. Tender for earthwork and minor bridge for first 2 km
on railway land have been finalised. Work is expected to commence once land is

approval in April 1996, aims to connect Lumding in Nagaon district with Silchar in Cachar district, Assam

Earthwork and bridges are in
progress between Lumding and Silchar in 90 km length (40 km from Lumding end and 50
km from Silchar end). 40 per cent of the eathwork in this section has been
completed. Out of the 138 minor bridges 50 has been completed. Work on the
Silchar-Jiribam gauge conversion is being carried out as a material modification of
this work.

The project is being
implemented with private sector participation. The rail line is considered to be
vital in order to transport iron ore from the north-western parts of the state to
the coastal areas where the co-promoters of this project are proposing to set up
their respective steel plants

Most
of the land acquisition work is over. Earthwork and bridgework are in progress from
Banspani end. Out of 361 bridges works on 207 minor bridges have been completed and
on 24 major bridges have been taken up. The project is expected to be completed by
December 2003 subject to availability of resources.
