BEST to improve supply
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) plans to improve its distribution network in Mumbai with an investment of Rs 672 crore during 2001-06.
According to a draft report, BEST plans to use the funds to improve reliability and security of power supply, reduce distribution losses from the existing 10 per cent, maintain voltage profile, avoid power thefts, automate the distribution system and computerise the system to make it effective. BEST also plans to undertake low-voltage cable laying work for quicker restoration of power supply in case of faults. Accordingly, there are plans to lay around 200 km of cables each year.
BEST plans to install dry type transformers on a large scale, particularly in the distribution substations. The undertaking plans to replace about 100 transformers every year for five years. Plans are also afoot to replace the existing 10-lakh conventional metres by electronic ones in a phased manner.
BEST also plans to use the above mentioned funds to construct a new distribution substation at 11 kv/415 volt level, new receiving substations at 110 kv /33 kv/22 kv level, laying of high voltage/low voltage cables, communication network, electronic metres and test benches.
