Ongoing rail projects get top priority

By A Special Correspondent

Departing from tradition Railway Minister Nitish Kumar has decided to concentrate on completing ongoing projects rather than announce a plethora of new projects.

The ministry has budgeted Rs 300 crore for the year 2002-03 for the Udhampur-Katra and Qazigund-Baramulla sections, which have to be completed within three years. This project was deemed as a National Project in 1996 but has been pending completion due to lack of funds.

In addition, the ongoing gauge conversion from Luni to Munabao and the new line between Kolayat and Phalodi will be taken up on priority basis. A sum of Rs 130 crore has been earmarked for the coming year for these projects as against Rs 25 crore provided in the current year. The Ministry of Defence will provide the necessary funds for the early completion of the projects.
