In brief

Initial setback for Simhadri
Though NTPC's Simhadri thermal power plant stage I (500 mw) was synchronised in February, well ahead of schedule, the unit continues to have teething problems, necessitating a brief shutdown in April. Before the shutdown, the plant was able to supply 210 mw of power, while at present generation has gone up to 350 mw. According to NTPC sources, the teething problems would not affect the commissioning schedule of stage II of the plant (500 mw) in June. According to sources, 180 days is the stipulated period for any thermal plant to commence operations on commercial lines after synchronisation.

Delhi govt to set up power plant
The Delhi government has acquired land in Korba district of Chhattisgarh for setting up a 1,000-mw captive power power plant. The power project, which will come up in the vicinity of the coal pitheads, is expected to take care of the state's future power needs.

The CEA has been appointed as power consultant to the project, which will require techno-economic clearance from the same body.

Kota TPS VI held up
The techno economic clearance for the Kota TPS unit VI, which was considered by the CEA in January, has been held up due to tardy response from the Coal Ministry. It is yet to ratify the coal linkages. Civil works for the boiler area and orders for steam and turbine generator have been placed. The plant will be commissioned within 27 months from date of placement of order for the main plant package and equipment.

Gujarat Power to set up plant
Gujarat Power Generation Company will form a new company, Chhattisgarh Gujarat Power Generation Company Ltd, for setting up a 500-mw power plant in Chhattisgarh. All the documents necessary for formation of a limited company have been sent to the Chhattisgarh government for completion of formalities by June end. Four companies applied and got approval for pithead power projects of different generation capacities. These proposals have been sent to the Kolkata-based Development Consultant Private Ltd for appraisal.
