The Tamil Nadu government will complete three irrigation schemes of the World Bank aided Water Resource Consolidation Project in the state by September 2002. These projects are the Periyar Vaigai phase II scheme, Adavinainarkoil scheme and Vadakku Pachayar medium irrigation project, which would entail an investment of around Rs 135 crore. These projects, on completion, are likely to serve approximately 14,000 hectares across Madurai, Teni and Tirunelveli districts.

The projects form a part of the 52 irrigation schemes being implemented under Tamil Nadu Water Resource Consolidation Project. The WRCP includes nine new ongoing viable irrigation projects and rehabilitation and modernisation of 43 existing irrigation schemes. Some of the projects have already gone on stream in 2000, namely Poigaiar and Rajathope. The Mordhana new ongoing irrigation scheme is expected to commence operation in the first quarter of 2003.
