Smooth going for Dhauliganga works

Hindustan Construction Company Ltd has completed the second milestone of excavation of 2.1 km of head race tunnel at Dhauliganga Hydroelectric Project in Uttaranchal being set up by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd. The project is a part of the Rs 235 crore contract awarded to HCC and Samsung, Korea, combine. HCC has to construct 4.4 km, 6.5 metre dia head race tunnel for the project. The company has also completed the concrete lining in the ventilation tunnel. Further, excavation of draft tube manifold, horizontal pressure draft and transformer cavern is complete. Excavation work is in progress in the trial race tunnel and gate shaft and powerhouse cavern.

According to the terms of the contract, the HCC combine has to complete all the civil works within 54 months, which is by July 2004. Construction of the dam and 1-km head race tunnel work had been awarded to Daewoo Corporation, Korea, and Kajima Corporation, Japan.
