Rail electrification target exceeded
The Indian Railways has electrified 25 per cent or 15,680 km of the total route km in the country. The Railways exceeded their electrification target in the 9th Plan by 184 km to cover 2,484 route km. It now aims to cover another 2,150 route km in the 10th Plan.

Work on NH-1A in J&K begins
Work on certain sections of the Pathankot-Jammu road and the Jammu-Srinagar sector are scheduled to commence this month. The four laning between km 80-km 97.2 between Pathankot-Jammu commenced last November. The Border Roads Organisation will renovate the 478-km long Pathankot-Srinagar under its Project Beacon. This highway is expected to be completed next year.

NH-6 in Chhattisgarh to be re-laid
At the end of the next two months, the part of NH-6 traversing Chhattisgarh will have a new look. The state government is spending roughly Rs 13 crore to improve the riding quality of road from km 119 to km 353. Road stretches between km 17 and km 25 on NH-43 and between km 76/6 and km 91/6 on NH-216 will also be strengthened at an outlay of Rs 4 crore. In addition, in Sarguja district, the government proposes to complete within the next six months 14 road stretches totalling 67 km under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna. It has earmarked an outlay of Rs 11 crore for these works.

New railway line in north-east
The Northeast Frontier Railway is investing funds in the construction of a new railway line between Kumarghar and Agartala. Initial works between Kumarghar and S.K. Para section will be completed within a year-and-a-half. Work will involve construction of Br No.73, 76 and Br 34 to be constructed on the Manu-Chhellengta Road and Manu Maracheera Road.

Road overbridges in Madurai
The Highways Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, will construct three road overbridges, one on Madurai-Palamedu road and two on the Madurai-Kanyakurami road. The road overbridges with a project outlay of Rs 8 crore will be ready by end-2003. It will first prequalify contractors for the works.
