Work on the 12-km long tunnel from Bhandup complex to Malad Hill reservoir and further up to Charkop in north-west Mumbai is progressing well ahead of schedule. Hindustan Construction Company Ltd, which is executing the contract, has already completed 2.5 km stretch of the tunnel from Bhandup to vent hole four-and-a-half months ahead of schedule. Boring works at Malad have commenced though extremely hard strata are posing a problem. Shaft excavation work at Charkop has been completed. Further, shaft excavation work at Liberty Garden, Malad, going on while well sinking work has been completed.
A water supply tunnel in Mumbai constructed previously by HCC
The ambitious 3-A water supply tunnel project undertaken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will supply 355 million litres of water per day to Mumbai suburbs like Malad, Kandivli and Dahisar. The project, the foundation stone of which was laid in October 2000, involves construction of tunnel 60 metres below the ground. The Rs 660 crore project is expected to be completed by July 2006.
