By A Business Correspondent
After a long wait, construction work on the Shahpur Kandi Dam in Punjab work commenced last month. On completion, the project will generate 168 mw of additional power and tap 3.48-lakh hectare of irrigation potential besides development of the area, including tourism and recreation facilities. Further, the project would also help the Ranjit Sagar Dam to generate its full capacity of 600 mw power as more water would be released through a new tunnel. The project has been included under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme of the Central government. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 1,058 crore. Of this Rs 71 crore has already been spent on the project for land acquisition and creating infrastructure.
Work on the project was supposed to have commenced last October. However, the Central government withheld the release of Rs 40 crore as the Punjab government failed to contribute its share.
