Konnar Canal project by 2004
One of Jharkhand's prestigious irrigation projects, the Konnar Canal project, is expected to be completed within two years. The project was originally conceived in 1979 but could not see the light of day due to various reasons. The cost of the project cost was then estimated to be Rs 11.73 crore. The cost has since escalated to Rs 125.4 crore. Upon completion nearly 62,800 hectares of land would be brought under cultivation.
Super speciality hospital inaugurated
The Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences, a modern super specialty corporate hospital, was opened to public on May 16. The Rs 80 crore hospital is spread over 4 acres and has 450 beds and 25 super specialty wards.
Bhushan Steel signs MoU with Orissa
Bhushan Steel Ltd has signed a MoU with Orissa government for setting up a steel plant at Lapang in Jharsuguda district involving an investment of Rs 3,500 crore. In the first phase a 1.2 million tonne hot strip mill would be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 1,650 crore. And, in the second phase, this capacity will be increased to 2.8 mt with an additional investment of Rs 1,850 crore. The first phase will start commercial production by the year 2007.
Fund crunch hits Telugu Ganga
The Rs 2,734 crore Telugu Ganga project jointly promoted by the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu governments is delayed due to lack of funds with the AP government. Out of its share of Rs 2,541 crore, the AP government has spent only Rs 1,900 crore so far. The TN government has spent Rs 185 crore out of its share of Rs 193 crore. The project, which was mooted in the 1970's, is expected to irrigate 2.3 lakh hectares in AP and TN.
Flyover projects may be delayed
Two flyover projects in Guwahati, Ganeshguri and Ulubari flyovers, may not be completed soon as the funding agency, Hudco, has refused to release further funds for the projects following a dispute with the government over certain issues. According to the original plan, Hudco had committed Rs 17 crore and Rs 12.9 crore for the two projects, respectively. Hudco has so far released Rs 10 crore for the Ganeshguri flyover and none for the Ulubari flyover.
