BHEL Ltd has prepared the techno-economic feasibility report for an electric trolley bus (ETB) system in Delhi. SBI Caps has prepared the financial feasibility study for the project and has forwarded its views to the Committee of Secretaries of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi.
ETBs are electrically propelled vehicles drawing power from overhead conductors. It is a comfortable, safe and pollution-free mode of public transport. BHEL has recommended the introduction of ETBs on four major corridors in Delhi covering a distance of 83.5 km. The pilot project involving the first bus would operate along the route between Tilak Marg to Dhaula Kuan. The other routes where these buses would be introduced would be the Ring Road, the Outer Ring Road, the Gurgaon zone and the Mayur Vihar zone. BHEL has estimated the total cost of the project at Rs 254.44 crore. BHEL has designed the buses and, in future, will also take on repair and maintenance.
Chandigarh is also in the process of implementing a similar transport scheme.
