TN to modernise rainfed tanks

The Tamil Nadu government plans to modernise its rainfed tanks in various locations in the state with foreign aid. Germany, Japan and Russia have agreed to invest Rs 300 crore, Rs 900 crore and Rs 200 crore, respectively, in the project. The scheme will serve cumulatively about 6 lakh hectares, up from the current 2.5 lakh hectares. Work on the project will be taken up in 2004 with a three-year gestation period.
The government will also undertake irrigation projects under the Rs 2,900 crore Water Resource Consolidation - Project II.
