Gherzi Eastern to submit reports on urban projects

By Shilpa Puri

Gherzi Eastern Ltd is submitting its report on the Udaipur Town project and the Gujarat Earthquake Rehabilitation and Reconstruction project next month. The Rajasthan Urban Infrastructure Development Authority and the Gujarat Urban Development Corporation Ltd have retained the industrial consulting firm for design and supervision consultancy of the two ADB-funded projects.

RUIDA is executing the Udaipur Town project for improvement of water supply and sanitation, solid waste and waste water management, roads and traffic management, and slum upgradation in major cities of the state.

For GUDCL, Gherzi is preparing a development plan for reconstruction, relocation and extension of infrastructure, earthquake damage assessment, preparation of a vision statement and development strategy, financing and implementation strategy, implementation schedule, urban governance, institutional strengthening of municipalities, and will also supervise construction works.

The company, a joint venture between the Wadia Group and Gherzi Organisation, Zurich, an international consultancy consortium, has been providing its services since 1960. Based in Mumbai with offices spread across the country, GEL specialises in infrastructure, especially highways, bridges, water supply, environment engineering and urban planning. A.K. Dasgupta, President & CEO of the company, is bullish on these sectors. Says he, "These are the fast growing sectors which will see a lot of activity in the near future."

The company prefers to work for externally aided projects and has registered with various international lending agencies like the World Bank, ADB and UNDP. "With such projects, there usually is no delay in project implementation as funds are tied up initially. The projects usually go through. Another major hurdle, that of land acquisition, also slows down projects," Dasgupta states.
