AP refuses to forego share of Talcher power

By A Business Correspondent

The government of Andhra Pradesh has declined to forego its share of 150 mw power from the 460 mw Talcher TPS in favour of either Tamil Nadu or Karnataka. These states have been demanding that AP, a near surplus state, forego its share from NTPC's Talcher station. They have been arguing that the entire capacity of the 1,000 mw Simhadri Power Plant has been earmarked to AP. The first unit of 500 mw was commissioned in February 2002 and the second unit of 500 mw would be commissioned in a couple of months.

Andhra Pradesh has indicated it will require the 150 mw from Talcher and also the 500 mw from Simhadri unit II as the state was targeting an SDP growth rate of close to 9 per cent for the current fiscal year. However, in the event of a surplus, it was willing to sell the same to the neighbouring states.
